After losing to West Wilkes in the regular season finale on Monday, Ashe turned right around and won the rematch against the Blackhawks in Miller’s Creek on Tuesday in the first round of the Mountain Valley Conference Tournament.
Both games ended in an identical 72-64 score.
In Monday’s game, Ashe built a big lead in the first half, but saw the Blackhawks battle back to take go in front with two minutes remaining and hit some clutch baskets and free throws in the closing minute to get the victory.
West Wilkes’ Alex Greer led all scorers with 29 points including 20 points in the second half.
Ashe’s seniors stepped up in a big way Monday even though the team came up short. Cullen Ashley scored 18 points and had five rebounds, two assists and a steal. Devan Sheets had 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds to go along with two assists and two steals.
Alex Spencer had 11 points and three steals. Bradley Lucas scored nine, Connor Bowers had nine, Parker Shelton had two and Kendall Richardson hit one free throw.
In the rematch at West, Sheets and Ashley once again led the way, this time in a winning effort. Sheets had 15 points and seven rebounds while Ashley scored 14.
Bowers scored eight points and added five rebounds.
One big difference in Tuesday’s game was the boost that the Huskies got from a few junior varsity players on the court.
Freshman James Bittle had eight points and six rebounds, CoCo Clay scored four points, Judd Price had two points and Stanton Moore hit one free throw.
Spencer chipped in six points, Shelton had four, Lucas had four and Richardson scored four. Corbin Winebarger rounded out the Husky score totals with two points.
If Ashe beats Starmount on Thursday, the Huskies will earn a spot in the championship game on Friday at North Wilkes.
