Elkin, the preseason pick to take home the league championship this year, came away with a 7-2 victory against the Huskies on Tuesday.
“Elkin proved why they are the conference leader by playing very good tennis,” said Ashe County Head Coach Larry Dix. “This was great experience for our young, inexperienced team.”
The Elks swept Ashe in all six singles matches. Top seeded Ryan Schell beat Alex Church, second seeded David Bullin defeated Jacob O’Neal and Chad Vestal beat Andrew Shepherd in the third seeded match.
Fourth seeded Jacob Lyon beat Caleb Adcock, fifth seeded Matthew Schumak outpointed Dakin Christoferson and Reed Turner took down Frank Ledezma in the battle of sixth seeded players.
All was not lost however as Ashe came away winning two of the three doubles matches. Shepherd and Adcock scored an 8-5 win over Daniel Soos and Ricky Rendon while the duo of Christoferson and Ledezma earned an 8-4 win over Turner and Asheer McRitchie.
“Our boys did a good job of getting the balls back and winning some points,” Dix said. “I saw much improvement in their net play and approach shots.”
Coach Dix said he was also pleased to see his players going to the net more and playing smarter on the court.
This was the third match of the young season and all three have come against very strong competition, including the top two teams in the Mountain Valley Conference last season (East Wilkes and Elkin) as well as 4A tennis power Watauga.
“I am proud of the positive attitude and sportsmanship that our team is portraying against these stronger teams” Dix said. “It is exciting to see these young men develop their skills.”
