The first conference soccer match of the year was an 80-minute defensive battle, but it would be the Lady Elks that found the game-winning goal late in regulation to get the 1-0 win.

Elkin moved to 3-1-1 on the season while Ashe County dropped to 1-3-1 and 0-1 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.

Ashe’s lone win so far was a 9-0 blowout over Mitchell County earlier in the month.

The Lady Huskies will have three games this week, including a pair of conference games. All of that, of course, is weather permitting.

Ashe is scheduled to host Forbush in a non-conference battle on Monday, followed by another home game against Starmount on Tuesday before heading to Wilkes Central on Friday.

Currently the Falcons are 4-2-1, the Rams are 0-4 and the Eagles are 2-6.

April opens with a match at East Wilkes on April 1 and non-conference game against Avery County in Newland on April 3. The Lady Huskies will be back at home on April 4 against North Wilkes.
