Now that the Ashe County Mat Monsters wrestling season has ended, head coach Alex Wray and his kids are already starting to work and prepare for next season’s events.
The team will be hosting its third fundraiser this coming Tuesday at Pizza Hut in Jefferson.
Between the hours of 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., 10-percent of the proceeds will go towards paying for the Mat Monsters to attend an upcoming special wrestling camp hosted by professional MMA fighter and coach, Jeff Bedard. All tips will also go towards the fund.
Bedard holds a 13-2-1 MMA record and is now the lead trainer at Compound Training Facility in Buford, Ga.
Bedard only lost three wrestling matches during his high school career and won three state championships.
In college, Bedard was a two-time All-American and was the 1988 NAIA National Champion.
Bedard currently trains with some of the UFC’s best fighters and is one of the cornermen for UFC lightweight Brian Bowles.
The one-day wrestling camp featuring Bedard will be on Saturday, April 12 at Ashe County Middle School. It is $50 to attend both sessions. Session one is from 10 a.m. until noon and session two is from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
The young wrestlers will learn tips and techniques on take downs, set ups, escapes and other fundamentals that will make the grapplers even better as they continue to learn and improve their skill.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. in the gym lobby and the camp fee can be paid by check, cash or money order. Checks and money orders should be made payable to Jeff Bedard.
