Four Mountain Valley Conference teams met up at Wilkes Central High School on Thursday and Ashe County once again took the top spot in the men’s and women’s overall team score.
The women’s team scored 90 points, good enough for a 10-point edge over second place Wilkes Central. The men’s team scored 100 points, well ahead of second place Wilkes Central (84), third place East Wilkes (45) and fourth place Alleghany (13).
Brandon Wingler had the best throw in the men’s discus, measuring in at 103 feet, 10 inches. The senior also placed second in the shot put with a toss of 41 feet, 11 inches. Luis Ramos was fourth in the shot put at 38 feet and Mitchell Brown was fifth in the discus, throwing 90 feet, nine inches.
In the triple jump, Ashe came in first in both the men’s and women’s event. Maison McNeill grabbed first place with a leap of 36 feet, seven inches. Paige Spell won with a jump of 32 feet, one inch, nearly seven feet better than second place.
Ashe also did a great job in the long jump. Jacob Blevins (20 feet, five inches) and Ronald Goodlander (18 feet, 10 inches) swept the top two spots in the men’s event. Hailey Richardson won the women’s long jump at 14 feet, eight inches.
In the final jumping event, Ashe once again came out on top in the high jump. McNeill and Sam Hudler were first and second overall and Spell finished first in the women’s event.
The ladies took four of the top five spots in the mile run. Margot Mattix won the race in 6:15. Alexes Armstrong was third, Laura Hodgson was fourth and Kayln Chapman was fifth.
In the two-miler, Andrew Tedder won the men’s race in just under 11 minutes. Hodgson and Mattix finished third and fourth in the women’s run.
Blevins earned the top spot in the men’s 100-meter dash, crossing the line in 11.4 seconds. He also won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.1 seconds. Blevins got yet another win, this one in the 200-meter dash in 23.9 seconds.
Richardson won her second and third events of the day, taking first in the 100 in 13.4 seconds and first in the 200 in 28.1 seconds.
Tyler Church won the 300-meter hurdles in 54 seconds and he placed third in the 110 hurdles.
Hallie Brown ran a strong race in the 400-meter dash, taking the top spot in 1:06. Teammate Shana Huffman placed fourth. In the men’s race, Hudler nearly won, but lost by just a tenth of a second, crossing the line in 54.9.
In the 800-meter run, Ashe had five runners finish in the top five in the two events. Helmer Alvarez and R.J. Burke were third and fourth in the men’s race. Chapman was second in the women’s run, Claire Liszka was fourth and Huffman grabbed fifth.
Ashe runner took the top spot in four relay events to close out the meet.
The track team will be in Elkin on Thursday.
