In a key Mountain Valley Conference showdown, the Ashe County Lady Huskies avenged its only conference loss by scoring a road victory at Elkin, 1-0.

Bekah Bowers netted the only goal of the night off of a pass from Bridgette Wilson.

The win gives Ashe an outright hold on first place with four conference games to play.

Ashe has a one-game advantage on West Wilkes, who the team will play in Miller’s Creek on Friday. Ashe also has a two-game edge on Elkin and Wilkes Central. The Eagles will travel to Ashe next week to wrap up the regular season.

The other two games will be against struggling North Wilkes and Alleghany, who Ashe easily defeated in both previous meetings by a combined 16-0 score.

Ashe is now 10-6-1 overall and 9-1 in the MVAC.

The ladies have won seven of their last nine matches, including nine conference games in a row.

With the playoffs just around the corner, this Ashe team has played a very tough schedule and should be ready for postseason play. The team played three opponents (West Stokes – first, Forbush – fifth, Surry Central – sixth) currently ranked in the 2A top 15 in the state in non-conference battles, as well as Elkin and Avery County, who are both ranked among the 15 best 1A teams.
