For the second time this season, West Wilkes thought they would be the team to end Ashe County’s conference winning streak.

The Lady Huskies would have none of that.

Candi Sanchez tied the game up at 1-1 in the 60th minute, a score that would remain the same until the second 15-minute overtime.

With just 20 seconds left in the match, Taylor May found the back of the net with a shot off of a pass from Sanchez to stun the home crowd and leave Ashe one win away from the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Championship.

The Lady Huskies have lost just one conference match this year and will clinch the title with a win over Alleghany on Monday. Ashe has already locked up the top playoff spot for the 2A teams in the split conference.

Ashe will end the regular season with a home match against Wilkes Central on Wednesday and a road non-conference game at rival Watauga on Thursday.
