Daniel Waln has been named the new assistant men’s basketball coach at Lees-McRae College under head coach Steve Hardin.
A resident of Fleetwood, Waln spent the previous two seasons as the head coach of the Ashe County High School Junior Varsity program and an assistant coach on the varsity squad. Waln also spent four years before that as an AAU coach for the 15U Ashe County Lightning.
Most recently, Waln spent time coaching the East Coast Fusion 17U squad, based out of Richmond, Va., that competed in some of the nation’s most prestigious prep basketball tournaments.
“This is a big step up for me in my career and I am so happy and blessed to be a part of the Lees-McRae basketball program,” said Waln. “I have had the opportunity to be part of four coaching clinics that included Roy Williams, Mark Gottfried and Frank Martin, and feel like I am prepared for this great new challenge.”
Coach Waln will be the recruiting coordinator for the Bobcats and will also play a key role in scouting, coaching point guards and the day-to-day operations of the basketball program.
Waln has had numerous opportunities to learn more about college coaching, particularly from assistant coaches Tim Lawrence (Robert Morris University), Tyler Sanborn (Hampden-Sydney College) and Rhett Bonner (UNC-Charlotte) as well as top North Carolina high school coach Marc Payne.
In addition to his coaching experience, Waln also had the opportunity to be a basketball camp counselor during clinics at Guilford College, Randolph-Macon College and Hampden-Sydney College.
Waln will graduate this Fall from Appalachian State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education.
