The women’s tennis team got a pair of 9-0 wins over Mountain Valley Conference opponents last week.
First up on Tuesday, the Huskies made quick work of West Wilkes.
“All the players won relatively easily. The match provided a great opportunity for the team to work on their game,” said head coach Larry Dix.
Top seeded Hallie Brown beat Jena Roten in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Second seeded Grace Miller took a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lindsey Matheny and third seeded Maggie Witherspoon beat McKala Bumgarner, 6-0, 6-2.
In the fourth seeded match, Keely Caddell beat Alexia Bumgarner, 6-1, 6-1. Fifth seeded Rae Zeller took a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Katherine Minton and finally Abby Manley beat Anna Handy in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
“This was a good conference win for the team. They are working hard and I can see development in all the players,” said Dix.
On Wednesday, Ashe hosted Alleghany and once again cruised to victory except for the sixth seeded match where Manley fought hard to win a third set tiebreaker after dropping the first set.
Brown and Miller were both 6-1, 6-0 winners over Madison Murphy and Madison Whisnant.
Witherspoon captured a 6-1, 6-1 win to beat Holly Miller. Caddell took a 6-1, 6-0 win over Trish Hampton and Zeller was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Hannah Witherman.
“I am pleased with our wins this week, but the season is early and we need to work on some aspects of the game,” Dix said. “I am proud of these ladies.”
Ashe is slated to play at Elkin on Tuesday and at Starmount on Thursday.
