A trio of non-conference matches have all gone the opponent’s way early in the 2014 volleyball season.


The Lady Huskies started the year at Alexander Central and came away with a 3-0 defeat. The Cougars won the first set, 25-13, the second set, 25-15 and the final set, 25-11.


Next up, Ashe had its first home match of the year against Avery County last Thursday. The match was extremely close in the first and third sets, but it would be the Vikings that scored the 3-0 victory.


Avery took the first set, 25-23. They followed that up with a 25-12 win in the second set and another 25-23 win in the third to get the sweep.


The Lady Huskies finished with 10 kills in the match. Lynsey Aldridge, Mckenzie Black, Savannah Poe and Corinne Jones each had two while Abby Miller and Molly Shelton had one.


Ashe recorded six aces on serves, including three from Cierra Sawyer. Miller, Poe and Haley Phipps had one apiece.


Other stat leaders included Aldridge with 16 digs, Poe with five digs and Jones with four assists.


On Monday, Ashe had a quick rematch against the Vikings. The Lady Huskies took the first set, 25-22, but the Vikings stormed back to win the next three sets and the match by scores of 25-13, 25-8 and 25-13.


Black recorded six kills for Ashe will Miller had three, Poe had one, Jones had one and Madeline Joines had one.


Aldridge had three service aces, Sawyer had two and Joines added one. Aldridge (23) and Sawyer (9) also led the way in digs.


Jones had a great night passing the ball with 11 assists and Aldridge was spot-on receiving serves, hitting 25-of-26 with just one error.


The Lady Huskies will open September with a road match at Elkin on Tuesday.
