Ashe County entered play against Avery County on Thursday without its three top scorers, but still came away with a 2-0 victory.

Miguel Ramos missed his second straight game, Victor Melo missed the game after exiting the Hibriten game early in the first half and Cesar Ruiz continues to miss time with a preseason foot injury.

The Husky defense proved to be up to the task all night long, limiting Avery’s scoring opportunities while Jamison Cline kept any shots that did get through from landing in the back of the net.

Trent Pruitt scored Ashe’s first goal in the 39th minute after sneaking through the Viking back line.

Ashe continued the offensive pressure in the second half with Kendall Wagner just missing high on a shot in the 46th minute and an Ashe corner kick one minute later that saw a header from Dante Shuler just miss the target.

Eric Barcenas nearly gave Ashe a two-goal advantage in the 63rd minute but saw his shot find the arms of the goalkeeper.

Jamison Cline made a pair of nice saves halfway through the final 40 minutes, including a diving stop on an Avery corner kick in the 65th minute.

Ashe’s continued offensive pressure paid off when Barcenas netted a goal in the 77th minute to put the finishing touches on a well-played game for the Huskies.

Ashe (2-1) will continue to play through its non-conference string of matches. The Huskies travel to Watauga for an early-season rematch with the Pioneers on Thursday. Ashe beat Watauga by a 3-2 score in the season opener.
