A New Hampshire motorcyclist was critically injured on Monday, Sept. 9, when a Crumpler woman turned her car into the biker’s path at the intersection of Greensboro Road and U.S. 221, just past Nathan’s Creek Grocery.

According to the N.C. Highway Patrol, Richard J. Donnelly, 61, of Pelham, N.H., is in critical condition at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after sustaining serious injuries as a result of the accident.

Donnelly was airlifted to Baptist from Ashe Memorial Hospital Monday afternoon.

According to witnesses, Donnelly was travelling southwest on U.S. 221 on his Harley-Davidson when the car, driven by Thelma Church, 73, of Crumpler, turned northeast off of Greensboro Road into the path of the motorcycle.

The motorcycle and Donnelly continued approximately 50 feet after the impact.

Donnelly was riding alone and wearing a helmet at the time of the impact, according to witnesses, who also said he was accompanying another pair of motorcyclists on another bike from New Hampshire.

Donnelly, according to the witnesses, survived the impact, but never appeared concious, even as he was being loaded into Blue Ridge Medical Transport by EMS personnel.

Church, according to a N.C. State Highway Patrolman at the scene, suffered lacerations to her face and was also transported to AMH. The NCSHP also reported Church had not yet been charged as a result of the accident.

Volunteers from the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the accident, providing first responder assistance and traffic control.
