A trio of faculty members from Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music will be performing at the Ashe Arts Center on Saturday, Feb. 22.
“It is always a pleasure to have faculty members from the Hayes School of Music at ASU perform for us in Ashe County,” said Jane Lonon, executive director of the Ashe County Arts Council. “The quality of musicianship, the professionalism and the unique repertoire choices that they bring always makes for an outstanding concert.”
Known as the Francaix Trio, the musicians involved are clarinetist Dr. Douglas Miller, violist Dr. Eric Koontz and pianist Dr. Bair Shagdaron. The concert will feature selected works by Johan Amberg, Robert Schumman, Jean Francaix and others.
“The combination of piano, viola and clarinet promises to be a treat,” Lonon said. “The Arts Council is excited about having this special event in the gallery space of the Ashe Arts Center.”
Miller is a Lenoir native who has performed with numerous orchestras including the New York Kammermusiker and Columbia University Orchestra in New York City. As a member of the faculty at ASU, Miller focuses on Woodwinds.
Koontz has led viola sections of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra in Spain and the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra in Israel. He teaches viola, string methods, literature and pedagogy and other subjects at ASU
Koontz also serves as coordinator of the string area, and coaches string chamber music and ASU’s graduate ensemble, Hayes String Quartet.
Shagdaron is a Russian native who has performed in several nations including: Japan, Germany, Portugal and Mongolia. He is a professor of piano at ASU.
“Bair Shagdaron is an incredible pianist,” Lonon said. “His performance last fall at the ‘Tickling the Ivories’ concert created an instant standing ovation.”
The concert will take place at the Ashe Arts Center from 7:30 p.m. to approximately 9:30 p.m.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for students. Tickets are available at the Ashe Arts Center and at the door the night of the show.
