Dr. Randy Edwards has been appointed chief of staff in the Office of the Chancellor at Appalachian State University. Edwards replaces Dr. Lorin Baumhover, who first held the position from 2005 to 2009 and again beginning in fall 2012 through June 2014.
Edwards was dean of the Walker College of Business for the last nine years, was chair of the Department of Accounting for 13 years, and first joined the business faculty in 1981. He has a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree in accounting from Appalachian and a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee. Prior to working in higher education, Edwards was an auditor for Ernst & Ernst, now Ernst & Young.
“Dr. Edwards brings a wealth of institutional history and possesses a deep knowledge of the region – both of which will be invaluable as I begin my tenure at Appalachian,” said Chancellor Sheri N. Everts.
Mike Steinback, chair of Appalachian’s Board of Trustees, said “Dr. Randy Edwards is an exceptional choice for the interim Chief of Staff position. He has earned the trust and confidence of the full campus community through his long and accomplished history at Appalachian. He is an accomplished veteran statesman who is highly respected across campus and throughout the UNC System. His wise and balanced leadership style will be a great asset in addressing the many opportunities and challenges ahead.”
As chief of staff, Edwards is a senior advisor to the chancellor and will oversee implementation of university-wide initiatives. He also will serve on various internal and external committees and boards; direct the university’s efforts regarding economic development and engagement; and work closely with faculty, staff and the administrative management team to ensure efficient operation of the university.
“I first came to Appalachian 40 years ago as a first-generation college student,” Edwards said. “Appalachian has truly changed my life and it is a great honor to be able to assist Chancellor Everts in her transition.”
