John R. Long died peacefully on March 20, 2014, at Covenant Village in Gastonia with his immediate family present.
He was born Jan. 11, 1933, in Alleghany County, the son of the late Dr. Lester and Lillie Long.
John graduated from West Jefferson High School and UNC-Chapel Hill. He was a Korean War U.S. Army veteran. He worked for the accounting firm of Ernst and Ernst and also at Ti-Caro in Gastonia.
John was a member of the Piedmont Day Lily Club and First Baptist Church, West Jefferson.
Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Patricia “Pat” Williams Long; son, Michael Brandon Long and wife Stephanie of Fort Mill, S.C.; daughter, Susan Long Colone and husband, Mark of Belmont; sisters, Louise Cashion of Cornelius and Lucy Miller of West Jefferson; grandchildren, Logan and Olivia Colone, Sydny and Madyson Long.
A memorial service was held at Evergreen “A Quiet Place,” in Belmont on Saturday, March 22, 2014, with Rev. Dr. Joan Martin. The family received friends at the home of Pat Long.
