The women’s cross country team took first place last week at West Wilkes where all eight Mountain Valley Conference teams competed.
Ashe finished with 62 team points. Elkin was second with 68, followed by Wilkes Central (77), West Wilkes (93), East Wilkes (120), Starmount (131) and North Wilkes (132). Alleghany did not have any runners in the women’s race.
Starmount runner Tessica Martin finished in first place followed by Elkin’s Shakai Ward in second and Brooke Bentley of Wilkes Central in third.
Ashe’s top runner was Mac Church who grabbed eighth place in a time of 22:52. Alexes Armstrong finished 11th overall, Victoria Reed placed 13th, Tyler Eller was 14th and Margot Mattix was 16th.
Other Ashe finishers were: Caroline Trent (23rd), Brooklyn Roten (20th), Olivia Brettschneider (34th), Claire Liszka (41st), Monica Francisco (42nd), Audreyanna Sanchez (46th), Lauren Testerman (50th), Kaitlyn Jordan (52nd), Amber Miller (53rd), Candelaria Sanchez (54th) and Kate Leashomb (59th).
In the men’s race, Ashe finished fifth overall with 108 points. Elkin ran away with the event with 45 points. Wilkes Central was second with 74 points, East Wilkes finished third with 87 points and North Wilkes was fourth with 104 points.
Ashe did have two runners inside the top 10. Andrew Tedder finished ninth in 18:24 and Gareth Berry was 10th, finishing in 18:27.
Cardinal runner Will Jolly was the race winner in a time of 17:15. Elkin runners Brandon Welborn and Jacob Parker took second and third.
Other Ashe finishers were: R.J. Burke (17th), Tyler Lambert (28th), Connor Donnachy (29th), Brady Buchanon (32nd), Billy Reyna (36th), Thomas McNeill (37th), Daniel Houck (40th) and Eden McKnee (68th).
