Women’s XC wins championship

For the third year in a row, the women’s cross country team has won the conference title, this year barely edging past Wilkes Central in a tight race at West Wilkes High School.
Ashe finished with 65 points, beating Wilkes Central by just four points. East Wilkes was third, followed by Elkin, West Wilkes, North Wilkes and Starmount. Alleghany did not have enough runners to compete for the team championship.
Elkin’s Shakai Ward took the individual championship, finishing in first place in a time of 21:08. Wilkes Central’s Brooke Bentley and her teammate Jordyn Halvorsen finished second and third.
Ashe’s top runners all finished in a tight pack from 11th place through 15th place. Mac Church led the group, followed by Alexes Armstrong, Tyler Eller, Margot Mattix and Kalyn Chapman.
Other Ashe finishers included Caroline Trent (23rd), Olivia Brettschneider (33rd), Monica Francisco (34th), Brooklyn Roten (37th), Kaitlyn Jordan (39th), Audrey Anna Sanchez (40th), Amber Miller (49th), Claire Liszka (50th), Lauren Testerman (51st), Rosy Alvera (52nd) and Kate LeaShomb (53rd).
The men’s race was not as close, but the Husky runners performed well enough to finish as runner-up.
Elkin completed the race with 45 points, 28 points better than Ashe. Wilkes Central was third, followed by West Wilkes, East Wilkes, North Wilkes and Alleghany. Starmount did not have enough runners to qualify for the team championship event.
East Wilkes runner Will Jolly won the race in 16:59. Ashe’s Andrew Tedder took second place in 17:26 and Elkin’s Brandon Welborn was third in 17:27.
Gareth Berry was Ashe’s second best runner, finishing in sixth place overall. Other Ashe runners included R.J. Burke (18th), Tyler Lambert (23rd), Thomas McNeill (24th), Brady Buchanon (25th), Conner Donnachy (32nd), Billy Reyna (37th) and Eben MacKnee (60th).
Ashe Head Coach Shane Greene was honored as being named the MVAC Cross Country Coach of the Year.
Up next, Ashe will have several runners competing in the 2A Regional meet on Saturday in Kernersville.
