Senior Candi Sanchez capped off an Ashe County comeback with her game-winning goal with just under two minutes left to play.
Sanchez’s strike in the 79th minute pushed the Lady Huskies’ conference winning streak to five games.
Ashe had three good scoring chances in the first half but came up empty. Taylor May fired a shot that landed solidly on the goal post before being booted out of harm’s way in the 28th minute. Ashe had a corner kick in the 33rd minute and Sanchez had a shot stopped in the 38th minute, leaving the game scoreless at the half.
After not recording a single shot on goal in the first half, West Wilkes made its second shot of the half count when Cassie Burgess netted the opening goal in the 58th minute. She nearly had a goal in the 52nd minute but Chrissy Simmons made a nice save to end that threat.
With just seven minutes left to play, Ashe drew a penalty kick after being fouled inside the scoring box.
Sophomore Olivia Brettschneider took the kick and saw her shot stopped, but she did not quit on the play and ended up putting the rebound into the back of the net for the tying goal.
In the final minutes, Sanchez was in the right place at the right time and was able to score another rebound goal, this time off of a shot from May that gave Ashe the victory.
The Lady Huskies are now 6-5-1 overall and a stellar 5-1 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
Ashe will wrap up the first half of conference play this Friday at home against Alleghany.
