A lot of athletic talent was on display at West Wilkes high school last week for the conference championship track meet and it just so happened the home team was able to take home the top spot in both the men’s and women’s event.


West Wilkes blew out the field in the women’s meet, scoring 155 points and winning by 37 points over Elkin (118) and 50 points over third place Ashe County (105). Wilkes Central was fourth, followed by Starmount, North Wilkes, Alleghany and East Wilkes.


Things were closer on the men’s side, but Ashe County fell just short of the Blackhawks by 15 points. West Wilkes scored 180 and Ashe followed that up with 165.5. Elkin finished third, Wilkes Central was fourth and Starmount was fifth. East Wilkes took sixth, North Wilkes ended up seventh and Alleghany was eighth.
