Games start to count on Friday night when the Ashe County Huskies open the 2014 football season against North Surry.
The Greyhounds are a very experienced team, but not very deep with almost all of their offensive starters playing defense as well, including quarterback Hunter Snow.
Snow is coming off of a big season defensively with well over 100 tackles as a linebacker, but is also the leader of the offense as a senior.
In the backfield, the Greyhounds will rely on their workhorse tailback, Dakota Goss. Goss had the unenviable task of filling the shoes of departed star running back Blaze Acord and has responded well. Goss finished last year with over 1,100 rushing yards while also racking up 117 tackles on the defensive side.
Goss will have help in the backfield from fellow senior Corbin Bullins who has started off the season well including a pair of touchdowns in early season scrimmages.
For Ashe, the team will rely on senior quarterback Connor Bowers to run the offense.
With a big group of linemen in front of him, and weapons all around such as Jacob Blevins, Maison McNeill, Hunter Barnes and Colin Ellis, offense should not be a problem this year if everyone stays healthy.
This is the first of four non-conference games on Ashe’s schedule. The Huskies travel to Watauga, host R.J. Reynolds and go to Hibriten before the gauntlet of Mountain Valley Conference games begin.
North Surry has a brutal non-conference schedule that includes 1A powerhouses East Surry and Mount Airy as well as defending 2AA State Champion T.W. Andrews, who went 13-1 last year and averaged over 44 points per game last season.
