A reported embezzlement of funds from the Lansing Fire Department’s Fireman’s Relief Fund has resulted in the arrest of the department’s treasurer of that fund.

Thomas Ham, age 54, of Lansing was arrested by the Ashe County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, June 1. According to Sheriff James Williams, Ham had allegedly written 75 checks totaling $23,930 over a period ranging from April 2008 through December 2010. The proceeds were allegedly being converted to Ham’s own use.

The Fireman’s Relief Fund is not connected in any way to the operating fund account of the department.

Ham is in the Ashe County Jail under a $20,000 secured bond. First appearance is scheduled for June 3.
