Anna Wooten and Haley Maloney represented Ashe County in the 2A Women’s Tennis Championship held in Cary last weekend.

The duo qualified for the tournament after reaching the semi-finals of the Midwest 2A Regional in Salisbury two weeks ago.

Unfortunately for the two Lady Husky players, the team was defeated in the first round. Molly High and Ellie Whichard of Edenton Holmes High School beat Wooten and Maloney in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

The early tournament exit was not what the team had in mind, but nonetheless, Wooten and Maloney finished an outstanding season with a 22-2 record, and the MVAC Doubles Championship.

“They are both great athletes and have represented Ashe County High School very well during their tennis career here at the high school,” said head coach Larry Dix. “I commend them both and will miss their dedication, commitment and leadership.”

This year was the eighth straight year that a doubles team from ACHS has won the conference title. This was also the eighth time in the last nine seasons that the Lady Huskies have had a double’s team reach the 2A State Tournament.
