The Ashe County Huskies took over sole possession of first place in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference, and defeated the number one team in the 2A state poll.

Ashe jumped out to a 3-0 lead against the Falcons, and held on for a 4-3 victory on the road.

Sophomore Cesar Ruiz started the scoring in the fifth minute with a goal that let the Falcon players know that Ashe was ready to put up a fight against the top ranked team.

Junior Frank Ledezma put Ashe in front 2-0 with a penalty kick goal after a foul was called inside the scoring box.

The Falcons amped up its offensive pressure after falling behind early. Husky keeper Braxton Treadway made two great saves on back-to-back shots in the 19^th minute.

In the 32^nd minute, Forbush drew a penalty kick that looked like a sure fire scoring opportunity. However, the kick landed solidly on the post and bounced away.

Ashe quickly countered, and netted its third goal, this one in the 40^th minute of play from Miguel Ramos. The Huskies held a 3-0 lead at halftime, and had left the Falcon fans and players stunned.

As second half play began, Ashe remained aggressive on offense, even with the three-goal advantage. Lucas Zeller had a shot attempt stopped on a free kick in the 44^th minute, then Anthony Federico saw his header attempt sail just over the net one minute later.

Forbush started a comeback in the 65^th minute with its first goal to make the score 3-1. The Falcons netted its second goal in the 74^th minute.

However, Ashe had the response. Entering the final minute of play, Ruiz capped off the night with his second goal, and gave Ashe a 4-2 advantage. The Falcons added a late goal with just four seconds left to play, but the game was already decided. The Huskies were able to hand the home team its first loss of the season.

Ashe improved to 10-1 overall while Forbush dropped to 9-1-1. Ashe remained undefeated in conference play with a 5-0 record.

The Huskies will host rival Wilkes Central on Tuesday before heading to Alexander Central for a non-conference battle with the Cougars on Thursday.
