The offense for the Huskies was led by quarterback Daniel Waln who tallied up 212 yards passing with 139 of them going to Brandon Rinehart on the receiving end. On the ground, Aaron Scott led the Huskies with 60 yards and two touchdowns, and then Waln added two touchdowns for himself on top of his passing touchdown.
The Huskies first points of the game came off of a defensive play following a strong defensive stand for the Falcons. The Huskies moved the ball down to their own one-yard line on their opening drive of the game and faced a fourth and goal from the one-yard line. The Falcons defense sacked the Huskies’ quarterback in the backfield for a turnover on downs.
Following the turnover on downs, the Falcons’ offense did not prosper as a stout hit from a Husky defensive player on the Falcons’ possession knocked the ball loose and was scooped up by Dakota Price for Ashe. Price then carried the ball in from the thirteen-yard line for the opening points of the game and Ashe led 6-0.
The Huskies defense was pumped up after the defensive touchdown and following the kickoff for Ashe, Forbush ran two plays until the Huskies attacked again. On third down, Jeremiah Gilbert laid a hit on the ball carrier for Forbush which once again knocked the ball loose to allow Greyson Wells to fall on it for the Huskies and for the second straight possession for Forbush, fumbles caused Ashe to take over in good position. Ashe wasted no time and after only four plays, the Huskies added six more points off of a fourteen-yard touchdown run by Aaron Scott. On the two-point conversion, Daniel Waln connected with Ethan Graybeal on the right side of the endzone to give the Huskies a 14-0 lead with 1:34 remaining in the first quarter.
Forbush continued to suffer offensively on their next drive. Having only allowed a combined total of six plays in their first two possessions for Forbush, Ashe’s defense trotted on the field for Forbush’s third possession confident and once again stopped the Falcons’ offense for a short possession. On three plays, Forbush was backed up eight yards to face a fourth down and eighteen yards remaining and the Falcons punted the ball to the Huskies. The Huskies’ offense moved the ball down field with a thirty-eight yard pass play to Brandon Rinehart and then a fourteen-yard pass play to Nick May. However, a fumble by the Huskies was recovered by the Falcons for the first Husky turnover of the game.
Turnovers continued to plague the Falcons as they had already committed two turnovers in the game. After earning a first down, the Falcons on third down were only three yards shy of a first down. On the third down play, Dylan Brown was able to recover the third fumble by Forbush for the Falcons’ third turnover of the game and Ashe once again took over possession with good field position on their own twenty-nine yard line. The Huskies’ offensive line cleared the path for Aaron Scott on the next possession as Scott picked up fifteen yards on three carries and then a eighteen-yard pass completion to Dakota Price set up the score for the Huskies. With the ball spotted on the four yard line, Daniel Waln elected to keep the ball on a quarterback option to the right side and squeezed into the corner of the endzone for the Huskies’ touchdown. Following the extra-point by Dakota Price, the Huskies led the Falcons 21-0 with 6:16 minutes remaining in the first half.
Trailing 21-0, the Falcons’ offense showed some life on their following possession. With two rushes for a combined total of nineteen yards and three pass completions for twenty-six yards, the Falcons were able to gain three first downs. However, the Huskies’ defense once again stopped the Falcons on their next set of downs. The defensive stop for the Huskies on a Forbush fourth down allowed the Huskies’ offense to once again have good field position starting near midfield on their next drive. The Huskies continued to experience success in their passing game and a long forty-two yard passing play to Brandon Rinehart moved the ball down to the seven-yard line for the Huskies. Aaron Scott then got the call for the Huskies and following a three-yard run, Scott was able to into the endzone for a touchdown with a four-yard touchdown run. Dakota Price sent the extra-point attempt through the uprights for the Huskies’ twenty-eighth point and Forbush was still scoreless.
With a twenty-eight-point lead, Ashe’s defense continued to play tough against the Falcons’ offense. On the following possession for Forbush, Ashe held the Falcons to only three yards on three plays. On fourth down, the punter for Forbush mishandled the snap and Ashe was able to resume possession when that the punter fell on the ball to create the turnover on downs and Ashe’s offense started their drive at the Falcons’ ten-yard line with only forty seconds remaining in the first half.
Ashe wasted no time in scoring when that Daniel Waln connected with Ethan Graybeal on the first play for a ten-yard touchdown pass, and then the converted extra-point by Price took Ashe’s lead to 35-0 heading into halftime.
Following the halftime intermission, the Huskies continued to play hard despite a controlling lead. Following a quick possession for the Falcons, the Huskies had possession around midfield, but faced a third and long situation. On the failed third-down conversion, the Huskies elected to punt and a fifty-three yard punt by Dylan Brown was downed on the Falcons’ one-yard line for excellent defensive positioning for the Huskies. The Falcons faced a long 99-yard field and also a determined Huskies’ defense. On first and second down, the Falcons managed to gain six yards for some breathing space, but on third down, Ryan Shepherd and Buster Phillips busted into the Falcons’ back field and brought down the Falcons’ quarterback in the endzone for a safety earning the Huskies two points.
Following the safety, the kickoff by Forbush was sent into the arms of Dakota Price for the Huskies. With some huge blocks, Price was able to return the ball to the Falcons’ nineteen yard line to give Ashe’s offense excellent positioning for their next drive. A twelve-yard rush by Brandon Rinehart set up a seven-yard touchdown run by Daniel Waln, and then Price’s extra-point increased the Huskies’ lead to 35-0.
The Falcons trailing 35-0 could not get a break as on their next possession, once again struggled to mount any offense. After little gain on first and second down, they faced a third and six yards remaining. Ashe’s defensive line stopped the Falcons’ ball carrier in the back field for a two yard loss to set up the fourth down punt. On fourth and long, the long snapper for the Falcons sent the snap sailing over the punter’s head, but the punter was able to recover the high snap. Greyson Wells then made contact with the punter and brought him down in the Huskies’ endzone for the second safety for Ashe’s defense on the night and Ashe led 37-0 with 4:45 minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Following the Ashe kickoff, both teams traded possessions, which both resulted in punts for both teams. On Forbush’s second possession, Ashe once again stopped the offensive attack, which led to another punt. Aaron Scott was deep to return the punt from the Falcons and returned the twenty-six yard punt for thirty-four yards to move the ball down to Forbush’s twenty-nine yard line. A personal foul by Forbush on the play moved the ball down to the fourteen-yard line for Ashe and the Huskies’ offense struck on the first play. On first down, Ashe went to the air and Kelsey Combs connected with Greyson Wells for a fourteen-yard touchdown reception. Following the extra-point by Price, Ashe led 53-0 with the entire fourth quarter remaining to be played.
The fourth and final quarter was a defensive showcase for both teams as neither team could move the ball into the endzone and the Huskies’ defense was able to maintain a shutout of the Falcons and cruised to a 53-0 victory to even the Huskies’ record for the season at 4-4 and 2-1 in MVAC play.
The highlight of the game for the Huskies was the return of Tavin Holman to the lineup for the Huskies. Holman was recovering from an injury to the leg and Huskies’ fans were delighted to see his return to the lineup. Another good sight to Husky fans is the continued success of sophomore Aaron Scott for the Huskies’ offense. Scott’s running combined with the performance thus far by David Grubb has proved to be a success for the Huskies as they both have combined for 970 yards on the season. Grubb was not in the lineup for the Huskies Friday night due to precaution as he experienced a slight injury during the week prior to the game, but is expected to return to the lineup for the Huskies’ next game this Friday at Starmount. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 in East Bend at Starmount High School.
