Last Thursday, the Huskies varsity squad lost a tough conference match with powerhouse Starmount as the Rams shutout Ashe 3-0.

The Rams scored just 30 seconds into the game with a goal coming from Pedro Morales with an assist from Ulises Martinez.

Husky goalkeeper Andrew Lopp faced an onslaught of shots from the Rams but kept the Ashe deficit at just one until Martinez assisted on yet another goal, this time to Miguel Mendez to give the Rams a 2-0 lead at the half.

The Rams kept the offensive attack up in the second half, netting another goal half way through the final 40 minutes of play when Chandler Chappell drew a penalty kick. Juan Lopez took the kick for the Rams and got it past the Ashe goalkeeper to give the Rams its final goal of the night.

Ashe made a late push in the second half to get a goal up on the board, but the Ram defense was just too strong in preserving the shutout. The Rams outshot the Huskies 24-10 while Starmount goalkeeper Oscar Hernandez was excellent in net stopping all 10 shots for the 13-1 Rams.

On Tuesday, Ashe bounced back with another big conference win. Earlier in the season, the Huskies took care of business against West Wilkes on the road. This time, things once again went the Huskies’ favor as Ashe powered past the Blackhawks 6-1.

After these two games, the Huskies’ record currently sits at 7-4 in the Mountain Valley 1A/2A conference and 7-8 overall.

Volleyball

The Lady Huskies volleyball team faced a tough challenge at home against Alleghany, one of the top teams in the MVAC on Tuesday. The Lady Trojans scored victories in both the JV and varsity games. Alleghany picked up the sweep in the JV matchup two games to zero while also winning in the varsity match three games to zero.
