One sixth grade student from Westwood Elementary qualified for the biggest junior rodeo competition that the world has to offer.

Addie Fairchild earned a spot on the 2012 North Carolina National Junior High rodeo team, and traveled to New Mexico to compete in the annual National Junior High Rodeo Finals.

Fairchild qualified to compete in four separate events: Barrel Racing, goat tying, breakaway roping and ribbon roping.

This championship event featured more than 1,000 participants from 47 states, Canada and Australia.

Participants were competing for cash prizes, as well as more than $100,000 in college scholarships that were up for grabs.

The event was a week-long competition with first round events starting on June 24 and championship rounds beginning June 30.

In the first round, Fairchild finished her barrel race in 16.957 seconds, putting her 67^th out of 96 competitors in the event. In the goat tying event, she succeeded in just over 16 seconds. The biggest highlight of the day had to be in the Ribbon Roping event where she, alongside North Carolina teammate Will McCraw, had the second fastest time of 7.35 seconds out of 79 teams competing.

In second round action, Fairchild competed in the barrel race once again, and this time she jumped up the standings with a 17^th place finish in 16.354 seconds. Her two-round barrel race average put her in 33^rd place out of 153 competitors.

After the championship rounds, Fairchild ended up finishing fourth overall in the best all-around rookie cowgirl, an accomplishment she will certainly build on in the future.
