Thank you Mr. Reed. Your long response to my letter of August 25 was not too enlightening, but confirms that I could never be a REPUBLICAN, again. I will try to make this rebuttal short, concise and to the point:
1. After eight years of a REPUBLICAN President and a Republican Congress, who could have corrected all of the “so called” problems caused by Carter and Clinton, nothing was done but let them steep and get worse. We have had the Democrats in control of Congress for only two years. It certainly will take more than two years to clear up all the problems caused by the REPUBLICANS.
2.Yes, the high fuel cost has hurt the airlines, but they were in trouble before we had high fuel costs because of deregulation.
3.Your quote: “I understand our American auto manufacturers are doing quite well in Europe.” Yes, but Europe has not had the last eight years of our Republican Administration to work under.
A. Look at the results of relaxed Republican regulations on big business, greed and many more millionaires and billionaires. And let’s remove OSHA restrictions and count more dead each year on the large construction projects.
B. The Democrats of 2008 are asking for a tax structure like we had in 1992 to 2000 under the Clinton administration. Eight of the best years this country has seen. Clinton left a large surplus in 2000 when he left office. The Republicans spent it all and now we have a thirteen trillion dollar debt, including borrowed money from foreign countries.
C. Raising taxes on the wealthy is “income redistribution.” The last eight years the number of millionaires and billionaires in America has increased more than ever before. The Republicans have never been champions for the middle class. It is time to even the playing field and help the masses not the wealthy minority.
D & E. We use 25 percent of the world’s oil and we only have 3 percent of the world’s oil in the ground. Your quote: “gas prices are high by refusing to allow the oil companies to drill in areas productive as well as profitable.” With only 3 percent of the worlds oil in the USA? We are spending seven hundred billion dollars a year purchasing foreign oil and giving our domestic oil companies monstrous tax breaks.
F & G. It is neither difficult nor too costly to build cars to use CNG. compressed natural gas. We have enough natural gas in the ground to last longer than the 3 percent of available oil and CNG is 40 percent cheaper than gasoline. The lobbyists for the oil companies and money paid to our “civil servants” has stopped all rational thinking about the oil crisis. Continuing the use of oil in the future without converting to other fuels is disastrous. Global warming is a problem now and will become worse sooner, if we continue our oil consumption.
H. Your quote: “Outsourcing our companies and businesses is good for the USA.” Tell this to the millions of people who have lost their jobs with factories closing and moved out of the country.
After the Republicans ran the country in 1928 to 1932 with the BIG DEPRESSION, no jobs, no food and the stock market crash, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was omnipotent, a real GOD to the working class in the USA. I will never forget as my mother put us kids to bed in 1932, I heard her say, “What will we eat tomorrow?” As I watch history repeating itself, it appears that another depression is right around the corner, thanks to the eight years of the Republican administration blunders and lack of control. Oh, I am sorry, Mr. Reed, you will probably call this Socialism. Neither Capitalism nor Socialism means much to a mother and her children in a cold room with empty stomachs.
