Hamilton came on board with the Jefferson Post in June 2000 after retiring from a career in the soft drink industry. He was hired by then Publisher Rex Goss as an advertising representative and later named advertising director. In April 2001, Mid-South Management, former owners of the Post, named Hamilton as general manager and then publisher a year later.
As publisher, Hamilton has been responsible for the overall operation of the Jefferson Post and supervising the department heads and staff. He develops an annual budget and serves as liaison with the newspaper’s owners, Heartland Publications. He is also a representative of the newspaper within the community.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my eight years experience here,” said Hamilton. “I’m really not sure what I will do, but I would like to find some way to stay involved with the community.”
Hamilton said his involvement with the Ashe County community through the newspaper has been one of the most rewarding aspects of the job.
“That’s been the biggest plus with this job,” he said. “Being involved in a number of different areas of the community, the life of the community. I would probably have not had this level of involvement had I not been publisher. It has brought me into contact with a lot of good, qualified individuals trying their best to move this county forward, and I’m lucky enough to have been a part of it. I’ve loved it. And I’ll miss it.”
Hamilton said he will very much miss the staff members he has worked with at the Post in his eight years. “I want to thank all the staff for working together to produce a quality newspaper for a small mountain community.”
“I have tried to be a positive face for the Jefferson Post and the community, and I greatly appreciate the opportunities I’ve been given by Heartland Publications,” said Hamilton. “Heartland Publications has looked inside for my replacement, and I will be privileged to introduce you to that person, the new general manager/editor, in the Friday edition.”
