The Ashe County Volunteer Initiative 7th annual School Supply Drive was more successful this year than ever, resulting in more than 2,500 items being donated.
“I was very pleased,” said Glenda Luther, volunteer coordinator for the county. “We doubled our monetary donations this year, and went up 500 to 600 items in donated supplies.”
Luther said the month-long drive brought in over 2,500 donated items from pencils and pens to bookbags and calculators.
“We collected all the usual items, including 240 notebooks and 20 backpacks, and there was $700 in monetary donations which we gave to the schools to purchase more supplies,” Luther said. Ashe County High School and Ashe County Middle School each got $200 and each of the elementary schools got $100, she said.
Appreciation is extended to GE Aviation, United Chem-Con, Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church, the Retired Teachers Association and WKSK for donations, the collection sites at all LifeStore Bank branches, Fifth Third Bank, First Citizens Bank, Ashe Services for Aging, Ingles Market, Ashe County Library, and Dollar General Stores, and all the individuals who helped with and supported the project.
“Everyone worked hard and the community was very generous,” Luther said.
Supplies and funds were presented to the schools for distribution at the beginning of the school year.
