As the Holidays prepare to hit mid stride, the N.C. Cooperative Extension has provided insight into the rise of the Christmas tree industry in Ashe County.
According to Extension Agent Della Tucker, Ashe County has traditionally been a thriving mountain community that has staked its commercial viability in livestock and agriculture but another staple crop emerged in the county’s tapestry in the second half of the 20th century that has drastically changed the area’s scenic and commercial landscape: Christmas trees.
Prior to the days of the Fraser fir and the white pine, the county of Ashe relied on the production of tobacco, cattle, sheep, vegetables, and even timber as a means to support the local economy, Tucker stated. According to the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Ashe Center, Ashe County’s role in supplying crops and livestock was decreased after WWII due to the advent of the mechanized age that ushered in 100 acre plus farms in what has become known as the
