The Lady Huskies Volleyball team has built a 3-1 record in MVAC play with back-to-back victories over Wilkes opponents over the past week. Last Thursday, Ashe defeated the West Wilkes Blackhawks on the road in the fifth game, and then on Tuesday defeated the North Wilkes Vikings in a fifth game decision again.

The highlight of Ashe’s match at West Wilkes was the setting of an Ashe County High School Volleyball record for most kills in the game by Caitlin Elliott at West Wilkes, as she pounded home 29 kills. Elliott once again owned the highlight on Tuesday at North Wilkes when she tied her own record with 29 kills again.

The Huskies head coach, Laura Foster summed Elliott’s performances up with one statement, simply commenting “Caitlin Elliott is proving herself to be one of the best, if not the best hitter in this league.”

Elliott, along with accurate serving in both matches, and an all around team effort that has battled through recent adversities is accredited to the Huskies’ success in the past two matches.

Ashe has lost two players recently to injuries, losing Mallary Clay in the Huskies away match at Starmount, and then the Huskies lost Callie Barker to an ankle injury sustained in practice on Monday, and Brittany Lyalls was also not in action at North Wilkes.

“This team is definitely learning what the word ‘perseverance’ means,” Foster elaborated about Tuesday’s match. “Due to missing players, other players had to play different positions and some people out of position to get us through. I am very proud of my team.”

In the first of the two matches, Ashe fell behind two games to one at West Wilkes as they won the second game of the match. Ashe then responded to the do-or-die situation in game four, defeating the Blackhawks 25-18, and then the Huskies won the decisive fifth game 15-6.

In the second match of the pair, Ashe once again had to extend the match to a fifth game to finalize the victory after dropping the first two games 25-19, and then 25-18. The Huskies, in another do-or-die situation, won three straight games, winning game three 25-6, game four 25-13, and then game five 15-5.

Serving was a key component of the Huskies victories, as they combined for a 186 out of 200 in both matches.

Hillary Bowlin went 17-17 at West Wilkes, and then followed with a 25-26 performance at North Wilkes, while Elliott went 19-20 at West Wilkes then 10-10 at North Wilkes, Jessica Walker 21-23 at West Wilkes and 16-19 at North Wilkes, Randall Joines 9-10 at West Wilkes and 26-27 at North Wilkes, Callie Barker 15-17 at West Wilkes and Chloe Craine 7-8 at North Wilkes.

The Huskies returned to action on Thursday evening when they hosted Alleghany. The match started at 4:30 for the JV teams, and then Varsity squads followed.
