David Blackburn who was named Ashe County Schools’ Principal of the Year on Oct. 5, spoke about his hopes for Mountain View Elementary students recently.
“I was pleased to be chosen to represent Ashe County schools, and I’m blessed to have a job I enjoy,” said Blackburn when asked his reaction to being named principal of the year.
Blackburn earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Appalachian State University in 1996, and earned a master’s degree in school administration from the same institution in 2001.
Blackburn began his career teaching math and science classes for seventh and eighth grades and coached football at Ashe Central High School between 1996 and 1999.
In 1999, Blackburn continued his career by performing the same duties at Ashe County Middle School.
Blackburn came to Mountain View Elementary as assistant principal in 2008, and last year was his first year as principal.
“I am impressed by how hard the children work and how much they put into being successful. I am always amazed at the support the students get from their parents, their teachers, and the community. (Mountain View) is a really neat place,” said Blackburn describing his experience at Mountain View.
Blackburn said his goal for students is for them to leave Mountain View prepared to go on to middle school and graduate from high school.
“We hope to give them a foundation they can use to be successful in life,” he said.
