The final regular season soccer match of the year was a pivotal one for the Lady Huskies.
A victory would clinch at least one home playoff game in the first round, something that Ashe missed out on last year after coming out on the losing end of a tiebreaker.
The first half certainly did not go Ashe’s way with Wilkes Central taking a commanding lead.
Central striker Tori Andreski, who missed most of the year due to an injury, scored the first two Eagle goals with the first one in the seventh minute then once again in the 18th minute to take a 2-0 lead.
Just two minutes later, Wilkes Central got a third goal off the leg of Jessie Pardue. Pardue then added the team’s fourth goal in the 30th minute to take a 4-0 halftime lead.
Ashe opened the second half with a goal from senior Aspen Domske in just the second minute of the half.
Freshman Valerie Keys scored back-to-back goals in the 52nd minute and the 60th minute to pull the Lady Huskies to within one goal.
It would be Domske that netted the tying goal in the 69th minute. That goal marked the 102nd of her career and gave Ashe a chance to steal a road win with 10 minutes left to play.
Keys got her hat trick goal just one minute later to put Ashe in front for the first time at 5-4.
Late in the game, Bekah Bowers capped off the night with Ashe’s sixth goal of the second half to get the 6-4 victory.
Ashe finished the regular season with a 14-3-1 overall record and a 14-2 finish in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference, good enough for a second place finish behind undefeated Forbush.
The 2A state playoffs are set to begin this week. Ashe will be playing at home on Wednesday night.
