A local woman escaped serious injury this afternoon after she lost control of her vehicle on Peak Creek Church Road and slammed into an embankment.
When the car came to rest, she was trapped inside until emergency personell arrived and removed her from the vehicle. According to witnesses on the scene, an unidentified woman was driving north on Peak Creek Church Road in a gray Nissan Sentra when she skidded off the road and down a steep embankment of trees and brush, overturning, and leaving a trail of black marks behind her at approximately 1:35 p.m.
The Ashe County Rescue Squad and Laurel Springs Fire Department arrived at approximately 2 p.m., responding to a call made at 1:42 p.m. by a local couple passing by.
After freeing the driver from her trapped position and loading her into a stretcher, members of the rescue squad tied a rope to the stretcher and pulled the driver up the steep hillside to safety. The driver was then placed inside an ambulance at 2:27 p.m. and transported to Ashe Memorial Hospital.
According to an EMS official at the scene, the woman escaped the accident with only a few minor cuts and scrapes.
The cause of the accident is unknown, said an EMS official.
