It all came down to the final doubles match of the day, and for Ashe, it was a day to celebrate its second victory of the season over Starmount.
“I am very proud of the way our team played, particularly since we have not been able to practice outdoors since last week due to snow,” said head coach Larry Dix.
The winter weather has been challenging for all winter sports teams, especially the tennis squad.
Ashe and Starmount each won three singles matches to tie the score up headed to the trio of doubles matches.
Husky top seed Sam Bowers was a 6-0, 6-2 winner against Ricardo Hernandez. Second seeded Lucas Zeller made quick work of Daniel Stinson, winning 6-0, 6-0. Ashe got its final singles victory in the third seeded matchup where Een Shepherd easy handled Nick Worley, 6-0, 6-1.
Starmount scored wins in the fourth, fifth and sixth seeded matches. Jordan Roberts beat Jacob Oneal 6-4, 2-6, 11-9. Jonathan Allison was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Andrew Shepherd and Josh Tucker beat Travis Stanley, 6-3, 7-5.
In the first doubles match, Bowers and Zeller took down Hernandez and Stinson by an 8-2 margin. Starmount tied the match up at 4-4 when Allison and Tucker notched an 8-2 win over A. Shepherd and Jake Harrington.
With the match on the line for both teams, it would be Ashe’s doubles team that scored the big win. Oneal and E. Shepherd clinched the team victory with an 8-4 triumph over the duo of Worley and Roberts.
With the temperatures hopefully beginning to warm up, Coach Dix hopes the team can get the practice they need down the stretch.
“We just need more court time to work on ground strokes and get more consistent,” said Dix.
The tennis team will be back on the court for three matches this week. Ashe will travel to East Wilkes on Tuesday, host Wilkes Central on Wednesday and host Alleghany on Thursday.
