Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation is committed to helping children learn about electrical safety and recognized national Safety Month with them as part of this effort. The cooperative provides teaching materials to all fourth grade classes and school libraries in order to reach students with a live safety demonstration at an early age.
“We hope we are helping save lives by educating children about always being safe around electricity,” explained Grey Scheer, director of community relations.
Blue Ridge Electric proactively schedules the school demonstrations in the 30 elementary schools in its service counties of Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, and Alleghany. Blue Ridge also regularly does programs for the community colleges, Boy and Girl Scout troops, special education groups and safety fairs that reach thousands of people at a time. Safety training is also provided every other year to First Responders designed to keep those who protect the public safe from potential on-the-job electric and propane dangers. “We are pleased to offer these demonstrations to the schools and will continue to promote safety throughout our service area in as many ways as possible,” explained Kelly Huffman, safety manager.
