New River Soil & Water District congratulates students who participated in this year’s annual New River Soil and Water Conservation contests.
Each year, the local NRSW conservation district offers contests to third-, fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grader students to compete in the poster contest, said NRSW Education Coordinator Brenda Garland.
Also an essay contest is offered to 6th-grade students only, and a speech contest offered for seventh- and eighth-graders, Garland said. Students have been showing their talents through these soil and water educational competitions for more than 20 years, and many have gone on to win at area and state competitions.
This year’s winners are:
Poster contest, third grade: First Place Alyssa Cahan from Westwood Elementary (also won First Place at Area Level); Second Place: Amaliyah Shatley from Blue Ridge Elementary; Third Place: Emerson Rumfelt from Mountain View Elementary.
Poster contest, fourth grade: First Place: Emilee Williams from Mountain View Elementary (also won First Place at Area Level); Second Place: Jadyn Trivette from Westwood Elementary; Third Place: Jada Kemp from Blue Ridge Elementary.
Poster contest, fifth grade: First Place: Karoline Keith from Mountain View Elementary; Second Place: Zach Weaver from Blue Ridge Elementary; Third Place: Chris Luna from Westwood Elementary.
Poster contests, sixth grade: First Place: Adrian Arado from Westwood Elementary (also won Second Place at Area Level); Second Place: Samuel Tsolis from Mountain View Elementary; Third Place: Josh Taylor from Shadyside Home School.
Essay contest, sixth grade: First Place: Yzabelle Potter from Mountain View Elementary; Second Place: Josh Taylor from Shadyside Home School; Third Place: Lily Calhoun from Blue Ridge Elementary.
Students were honored with awards and refreshments at the April 23 contest event in Jefferson.
