Cameron Guyton pitched another outstanding game for the Ashe County Huskies, but this time, his strong efforts on the mound were enough to help the Huskies grab a 2-1 win at Forbush.
“Cameron was lights out and we played solid defense behind him all night,” said head coach Ronnie Pruitt.
Forbush scored first on an error in the bottom of the second inning.
Ashe tied things up in the fourth when senior Carson Knight reached home from third base on a wild pitch.
The Huskies jumped ahead in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and two outs. Alex Laws slapped a grounder to shortstop, and the throw to home plate was too late, allowing Knight to score the go-ahead run.
Guyton pitched through the sixth and seventh innings allowing just one baserunner on the way to Ashe’s first victory of the season.
According to Coach Pruitt, this also marked the first time in recent memory that Ashe had beaten Forbush on the Falcons’ home field.
Guyton finished the night by pitching seven innings while giving up just four hits and one unearned run to go along with 10 strikeouts.
Falcon pitcher Ben Temple pitched six innings and allowed two runs on three hits with 11 strikeouts.
Knight, Guyton and Johnathon Barlow accounted for all three of Ashe’s hits.
Starmount 12, Ashe 2
The Huskies finished up last week with a tough game at Starmount on Friday evening. The Rams came away with a 12-2 victory.
Ashe scored first and held a 1-0 lead through the first two innings of play.
In the third, Starmount busted through with four runs off of Ashe pitcher Joe Richardson. Two of those runs scored on an error, while the other two came on singles through the infield.
The Rams added on three more in the fourth, including a run scoring on a balk and another on a passed ball.
Ashe got its second run when Laws singled and Matthew Hamilton scored from second base.
Starmount put the game away in the sixth inning when Sawyer Davis drew a bases-loaded walk that forced in a run, then Jeremy Whitaker ripped a two-run single to bring across the 12th run of the night.
Tanner Mathis got the win on the mound. Mathis pitched five innings and allowed just two runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
The Huskies are now 1-2 overall and 1-2 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference. Ashe will return to the diamond on Tuesday night at East Wilkes before finishing up the week on Friday at Alleghany.
