The Historical Society’s 2013 annual gift to Ashe County is scheduled Friday, June 14, and Saturday, June 15, at the Mount Jefferson Presbyterian Church.
As usual, the celebration, which is open to the public, will begin on Friday night with a musical presentation and refreshments. The accomplished musicians and singers of Creek Junction will provide the music beginning at 7:30 p.m. Creek Junction is a bluegrass group whose members are Butch Barker, Lloyd Richardson, Paul and Tim Lewis. At 7 p.m., immediately prior to the performance, members of the Historical Society will meet briefly to elect the Board of Directors for 2013-14.
The gathering will continue 9:30 p.m. on Saturday with a primarily genealogical theme. Ron Blevins will present a talk about Blevins families, mainly of North Carolina and Virginia, but also descendents in other states. Ron is originally from the local area, but currently lives in Maryland. He has researched the Sizemore ad Blevins families for over 30 years and has written books and articles based on this research.
At 11 a.m., Karen Worley will present a talk about many families from Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. These families include Worley, Weatherly, Camper, Denton, Agee, Davis, Sumner, Davenport, Gilbert, Perkins and Moses. Karen has been doing genealogy research for many years and provides much insight into these families.
Following time off for lunch at a restaurant of choice, the afternoon session will begin at 1:30 p.m. when David Van Hoy will present a conversation on the history of the Grassy Creek Methodist Church and Methodism in Ashe County and Grayson County, Virginia. David, who recently published a church history of the Grassy Creek Methodist church, will also share his local history stories about the Grassy Creek area and families.
So plan to join the fun on Friday, June 14, and Saturday, June 15, at the Mount Jefferson Presbyterian Church, 201 S. Jefferson Ave., West Jefferson.
As always, there is no charge for this weekend of entertainment. Though the event is open to the public, you might want to register to ensure a space is available for you.
