Fund raising for the annual Ashe County High School marching band trip in April has fallen short of its goal and overshot its deadlines despite having raised the majority of its budget.
“Every year we try to do one big trip,” said High School Band Boosters Association President Mason Harris. “We went to New York last year; this year our trip is to Disney World.”
In years past, the marching band has gone to Washington, D.C., the Orange Bowl and the Sugar Bowl.
This year, the ACHS Husky Vanguard Marching Band and the “Cans and Pans” Steel Drum Band will spend four days in Orlando, Fla., where they will perform at Downtown Disney and the Walt Disney World Resort.
The travel group will include 42 student musicians, plus parent chaperons and school faculty for a total of 53 people.
The marching band will perform at the Downtown Disney outdoor shopping complex on Wednesday April 3, and the steel drum band will perform on Mainstreet USA in Disney’s Magic Kingdom on Thursday April 4.
The students will be critiqued and graded on performance and conduct during the trip, he said.
“This is a great experience for the kids,” Harris said. “There’s a lot of kids in the county that don’t get the opportunity to take a trip like this otherwise.”
“The parents, students and boosters have raised over $35,000,” he said. “We’re about $7,000 short.”
Travel agency and tour bus company deadlines for booking the trip have already passed, but extensions have been arranged, Harris said. “We’ve got until the end of March to come up with the rest.”
