So far this year, flooding of Big Horse Creek in Lansing Creeper Trail Park has washed away picnic tables and playground mulch, and deposited trash and debris along the creek bottom. A clean-up effort organized by the National Committee for the New River and the Greater Lansing Area Development Committee will begin 11:00 a.m. Wednesday May 22.
Big Horse Creek has flooded twice this year, washing away picnic tables and playground mulch in Lansing Creeper Trail Park, and depositing trash and debris along the creek bottom through the town of Lansing.
A volunteer clean-up effort organized by the Greater Lansing Area Development Committee (GLAD) and the National Committee for the New River (NCNR) is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Wednesday May 22.
“We will be picking up trash from the Little Horse Creek bridge to the New River bend at the low water bridge on McNeil Road,” said GLAD Project Manager Ann Rose.
A clean-up scheduled for May 11 had been rescheduled due to inclement weather, Rose said.
Courtney Wait, NCNR advocacy coordinator, said organizers and volunteers will meet in the park and split into two teams, one to walk the creek banks and one to walk in the creek itself. Volunteers who have waders or small water craft should bring them, she said.
The NCNR will provide trash bags, gloves and trash-grabbers, she said.
Volunteers should also bring snacks, water, hats and sunscreen, she said. “We’re trying to make a nice afternoon of it.”
