Five former Ashe County athletes are finding success at the next level, including four on the basketball court and one on the wrestling mat.
Aaron Scott is in his junior year at Appalachian State University, and has competed in 10 matches so far this season. For his career, Scott has 10 wins and 24 losses. Currently, the junior has wrestled eight times at 149 pounds and twice at 157 pounds with one win and nine losses.
App State finishes out January with home matches against Campbell and The Citadel on Jan. 15 and Jan. 18, followed by a road match at Duke on Jan. 23. The Mountaineers return home for the annual Appalachian Open, an all-day tournament held at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone on Saturday, Jan. 28.
The Southern Conference tournament is scheduled for March 3 in Lexington, Va.
Three former Lady Husky players are hitting their stride this season.
Chandler Christensen is in her sophomore season at Methodist University. The Monarchs are currently 6-2 on the year and 2-0 in the USA South Conference. Methodist has won six games in a row.
Last season, Christensen appeared in 21 games and started twice. She scored 17 points and grabbed 36 rebounds in her freshman campaign.
This year, Christensen has played in six of the eight games and has averaged just over 10 minutes per game on the court. Her best game so far came against Mary Baldwin College where she tallied six points and grabbed three rebounds in 13 minutes of play.
The lone senior on this list is Shelly Barker, who has started her final season at Guilford. She is one of three seniors for the Lady Quakers. This year, Barker has averaged six minutes of time on the court and has appeared in 10 of the team’s 11 games. Barker’s top game so far was in the season opener against Greensboro College. She scored two points, grabbed two rebounds and had two assists in 13 minutes off the bench.
Guilford is 8-3 overall and 2-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
Catawba College is where Mallary Clay is in her sophomore season. As a freshman, she played in 28 games and averaged 11 minutes a game. Her career-high of 13 points came at Carson-Newman. One of her biggest highlights of last season came in a win over Anderson when she hit two free throws with five seconds left to seal the win.
This season, Clay has appeared in all 10 games with one start. She is averaging nearly 19 minutes per contest. The sophomore is also averaging five points and three rebounds per game. In her most recent outting, Clay scored seven points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists in 22 minutes.
Catawba is 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the South Atlantic Conference.
Finally, Tommy Spagnolo is a junior at Appalachian State and has appeared in eight games for the basketball team. Spagnolo played a season-high 14 minutes in a 73-72 loss at home to Duquesne on Nov. 28. The junior’s best game came in the season opener against Montreat with four points and six rebounds.
App State is 4-8 overall and 0-1 in the Southern Conference.
