Even with a couple of key injuries, the Lady Husky tennis team continues to battle hard and grab some victories in the process.

Ashe 9, North Wilkes 0

With both Kasey Curcio and Hallie Brown out for this match, Ashe still came away with the sweep against North Wilkes.

Top seed Anna Wooten won in straight sets over Bethany Wagoner, 6-0, 6-0. Second seeded Haley Maloney was a 6-1, 6-1 winner against Kaytlin Garcia.

In the third-seeded matchup, Maggie Witherspoon came away with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Sara Bumgarner.

Ashe finished off the perfect 6-0 run in the singles matches with a 6-1, 6-1 win from Mary Austin Tugman, a 6-0, 6-2 from Hayley Ragland and a 6-2, 6-0 win from Ella Copeland in her first singles match of the season.

In doubles action, Wooten and Maloney stayed unbeaten with an 8-1 win over Wagoner and Garcia. Witherspoon and Tugman were 8-2 winners over Bumgarner and Handy while Ragland and Copeland capped off the sweep with an 8-0 win against Michaela Johnson and Kayla Royal.

Wilkes Central 5, Ashe 4

Ashe was right back on the court on Tuesday against Wilkes Central. The ladies put up a valiant effort, but Central held on for the 5-4 win. Ashe played with third seeded Curcio once again.

“I am disappointed with the loss, and felt we could have won it, but I am proud of our ladies for not giving up and playing under a lot of pressure,” said head coach Larry Dix. “This was great experience for the team as we finish out the last half of the season.”

Wooten captured a 6-2, 6-4 win over fellow top seed Frankie McKinney. The senior has yet to lose a singles match to a conference opponent.

Maloney also continued her winning ways with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Lindsey Vannoy.

The rest of the singles matches were all tight battles, but went in favor of Wilkes Central. Witherspoon took the first set against Mary Hollis, 7-5, but was defeated in the third set 4-6, setting up a third set tiebreak. Hollis escaped with a 10-5 tiebreak win.

Emily Faw was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Tugman and Madison Hayes was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Brown as she returned to action after an injury forced her to sit out the previous match.

In the battle of six seeds, Zoe Aquayo won a long, grueling match over Ragland. Aquayo took the first set 7-5, but Ragland bounced right back to win set number two by a 6-4 score. In the tiebreaker, Aquayo edged Ragland with a 10-8 win.

In doubles action, Wooten and Maloney defeated McKinney and Hollis, 8-6 and the duo of Witherspoon and Brown took an 8-1 win over Vannoy and Faw. The final doubles match went in favor of Central. Hayes and Aquayo were 8-5 winners over Tugman and Ragland.

Ashe’s record is now 7-4 overall and 7-3 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.

The Lady Huskies have one game next week and it is against first place East Wilkes. Ashe will host the Lady Cardinals on Tuesday.
