The Carolina Panther cheerleaders will be bringing their special brand of enthusiasm to the local community by gracing West Jefferson Chevrolet with their presence from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday Oct. 16.

“The Panthers are North Carolina’s home team, and I think this is a good opportunity for locals to be involved with the Panthers and see their cheerleaders. We’re just providing a platform,” said Brian Minton, West Jefferson Chevrolet’s general manager.

This event, called “Panther Day,” will also be a venue to raise money for the Ashe County High School marching band.

According to Barry Richardson, sales manager at West Jefferson Chevrolet, the Carolina Panther’s percussion drum line, their mascot “Sir Purr,” and local cheerleaders, football players and band members will also attend this event.

“We’ve had fundraisers and car shows before, but we’ve never hosted anything of this magnitude,” said Richardson.

Richardson also said “we’re expecting at least 500 people to attend the event.” He also said West Jefferson Chevrolet will probably move their vehicles from the center of the parking lot to its perimeter to make room for the large crowd.

Carrie Mitchell, Ashe County High School’s band director, said funds for the band will come from multiple sources.

According to Mitchell, Ashe Auto Brokers LLC and West Jefferson Chevrolet will give the band large donation checks that will be used to buy new band uniforms.

“It’s a really nice gesture. The event was kind of just thrown out to us; we didn’t even need to ask to be a part of it,” said Mitchell.

Mitchell said the band will play show tunes and dance music during “Panther Day.” They will also be selling hotdogs and drinks, to increase their fundraising efforts.

In addition, the band booster club will be at Panther Day selling raffle tickets. The prize will be a new 2013 Chevrolet Spark. There will be 300 tickets for sale at $100 per ticket. If every ticket is sold, the raffle will raise $30,000, minus the approximate $20,000 for the 2013 Spark, which would leave the band with about $10,000.

This event is sponsored by GMC and Buick, who are also sponsors of the Carolina Panthers.

"Unfair competition" in N.C. car market

An N.C. Senate bill would prohibit direct marketing to N.C. motorists by Tesla and companies like it. Is this a sound policy?
