Ashe County resident Connor Campbell started his dirt bike racing season off on a good start, getting the holeshot at the start of the race on the way to a third place finish.
Campbell, 13, competes in the North Carolina Hare Scramble Association, which races on several courses in North Carolina and South Carolina.
This is Campbell’s fifth year of racing and is something he enjoys doing.
This year’s race schedule consists of 16 races that started with the first event on March 10 in Union, S.C. Events will last through the end of November.
In hare scrambles, racers will drive through sections of wooded areas and ride laps anywhere from four to six-mile loops for one hour in the mini classes. Campbell currently races in the Mini A Class.
In his first race, Campbell had a strong start getting the holeshot at the green flag. He held third place on the first lap before moving up to second place in the next couple of laps. Campbell was even able to grab the lead twice before getting stuck in a ravine and finishing in third place.
“The track was filled with roots, but the dirt was perfect,” said Campbell. “It was a great day.”
Up next, racers will head to Lexington for a race on April 14 and then a race in Wilkesboro on April 28.
Racers also compete for season-long championships by being awarded points in each race based on how well they finish. Campbell currently has 53 points after the first race, just five points behind Mini A Class leader Garrett Duncan who won the first race.
