South Caldwell was the site of Ashe County’s first track meet of the season last week with four other teams taking part in the event.

Overall, the Ashe women’s team captured first place with 86 team points. Watauga was second (79) followed by South Caldwell (58.5), Hickory (55.5) and Fred T. Foard (47).

On the men’s side, South Caldwell came away with the win, scoring 89 points. Watauga was second with 75, followed by Hickory (67), Ashe (59) and Fred T. Foard (51).

In field events, Ashe started things off nicely with a fourth place finish from Dominic Maxwell in the discus throw with a toss of 98 feet, nine inches. Madison Little took first place in the women’s discus with a throw of 95 feet, five inches, a full 22 feet ahead of her closest competitor. Ashe’s Katie Orr finished fourth in that event with a toss just over 59 feet.

Ashe had three of the four top finishers in the men’s shot put. Maxwell was first place with a throw of 39 feet, five inches. Jake Woods and Brandon Wingler took third and fourth places.

Little captured second place on the women’s side with a throw just over 29 feet. She finished less than a foot behind first place Victoria Friel from South Caldwell.

The Huskies also had some good performances in the long jump and high jump. Jacob Blevins was second place in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet while Hunter Argetsinger finished in fifth place jumping just over 15 feet.

Aspen Domske won the women’s long jump with her leap of 15 feet, four inches. Domske also took second in the high jump at four feet, eight inches.

In the mile run, Mac Church was the highest finishing Ashe runner. Her third place run crossed the finish line in 6:26.

The women’s team continued its success in hurdles events, as they have done for the last few years. Erin Bingham and Paige Spell finished first and second in the 100-meter hurdles. Bingham finished at 17.2 seconds while Spell crossed the line in 18.2 seconds.

Bingham also grabbed first place in the 300 hurdles in a very close race. Bingham’s time of 51.2 seconds was just ahead of South Caldwell’s Breana Hoyle at 51.5 seconds.

The final individual track event was the women’s 800-meter event where Ashe had three of the top six finishers. Hallie Brown took second in 2:48 followed by Victoria Reed in third at 2:50. Taylor Kripps finished in sixth place with a time of three minutes even.

Ashe wrapped up the day with a second place finish in the women’s 4x800 relay, a first place finish in the men’s 4x100 relay, a second place finish in the women’s 4x100 relay, a second place run in the men’s 4x200 relay and first place in the women’s 4x200 relay.

An N.C. Senate bill would prohibit direct marketing to N.C. motorists by Tesla and companies like it. Is this a sound policy?
