The Ashe County Arts Council will sponsor “Coffee House Live!” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, in the Hensley Hall of the West Jefferson Methodist Church.
The featured performers include the Steel Magnolias, musician Scot Pope, Katy Taylor and Cindy Brooks Baucom. David Van Hoy will be the host for the evening.
The Steel Magnolias, Ashe County’s favorite female quartet, will make a return stop at the Coffee House. The lovely foursome will perform barbershop style, folk tunes, show tunes, do-wop style and more. Maureen Blackburn, Becky Burgess, Judy Dancy and Barbara Miller will entertain the audience with funny and touching music along with a few musical surprises in their own special signature style.
In 1992, musician Scot Pope escaped the rat race in Charlotte to live a simple, humble life in the Creston community. Before leaving Charlotte, he studied creative writing at Central Piedmont Community College under the tutelage of Barbara Lawing.
After his arrival in Ashe County, he joined the Blue Ridge Writers Group and continued to write poetry and short stories. Along the same time, Paula William convinced him to play music at her restaurant Sweet Aromas. Since then, Scot has played in many small venues in West Jefferson. For Coffee House Live!, he will play his guitar and perform familiar 1960s and 1970s folk rock covers.
Cindy Brooks Baucom and Katy Taylor are Ashe County natives who were born into families with strong musical traditions. Their fathers and first musical mentors, banjoist Jim “Bunk” Brooks and guitarist Fred Taylor, were lifelong friends who recorded and played bluegrass music together during the early 1960s.
The Brooks Brothers’ band also featured Cindy’s uncle, guitarist and lead singer Harold Brooks, and fiddle player Bill Spencer. For Coffee House Live!, Taylor and Cindy will pay tribute to their fathers’ musical legacies.
Taylor is a singer of gospel, folk, and bluegrass music for most of her adult life in local and regional bands. A lifelong resident of Jefferson, she directs activities for Ashe Assisted Living & Memory Care where she enjoys performing from time. She has led congregational singing at her home church, Nathans Creek United Methodist, since 2008.
For more than 30 years, Baucom has pursued her passion for Bluegrass Music as an award winning broadcaster, producer, promoter, singer, musician, writer, photographer and MC. Her national radio show, “Knee-Deep in Bluegrass,” went into syndication in 2003 with distribution by the John Boy & Billy Radio Network. Now heard weekly in nearly 100 radio markets, Baucom uses her knowledge of the music and enthusiasm to entertain and educate the listeners of her show.
Her radio career started at the age of 17 at her hometown station, WKSK in West Jefferson. Her radio work continued regionally over the next fifteen years at WKBC, North Wilkesboro, and WFMX, Statesville, preparing Baucom for her ultimate broadcasting goal of national syndication.
David Van Hoy, a multi-talented musician and performer, will entertain with stories, songs and a few surprises. Perhaps for a special treat David will perform on his accordion and ukulele.
As part of the diverse programming the Ashe County Arts Council offers, the Coffee House has become a favorite tradition where old friends and new friends meet, sample delicious desserts and enjoy quality entertainment.
