Appalachian Philharmonia Orchestra to perform at Ashe Civic Center

The Ashe County Arts Council will sponsored the Appalachian Philharmonia Orchestra from Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Ashe Civic Center.

The Philharmonia, comprised of faculty and student musicians, is led by conductor Cornelia Laemmli Orth and the guest soloist will be Karen L. Robertson.

The concert program opens with Siegfried Idyll, written by Richard Wagner as a birthday present to his wife, Cosima, after the birth of their son in 1870. Wagner intended for it to be a small private piece but expanded it to accommodate a large orchestra.

The program will also feature the Symphony No. 3 in A minor by Felix Mendelssohn. The symphony is known as the Scottish symphony written by Mendelssohn after a visit to Britain and Scotland in 1829.

French horn soloist Karen L. Robertson and the Philharmonia will perform the Concerto for Horn, E-flat Major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Robertson is professor of Horn at the Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music, where she teaches Applied Horn, Horn Methods and coaches Brass and Woodwind chamber music.

Before coming to Appalachian, she served on the faculties of the University of Missouri at Kansas City and William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. A native of Tennessee, Robertson received a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Tennessee/Knoxville, a Master of Music degree from the College-Conservatory at the University of Cincinnati, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Conservatory of Music, University of Missouri at Kansas City.

Orth is a guest conductor for the Hayes School of Music. She is the current Music Director/Conductor of the Symphony of the Mountains in Kingsport, Tenn.

Born and raised in Switzerland, Orth has Master’s Degrees in Piano, Music Education and Choral conducting from Universities and Conservatories of Zurich and Winterthur. She received a Master’s Degree in Orchestra Conducting from Northwestern University.

Orth has conducted in Chicago at North Shore Chamber Orchestra, the Northwestern University Symphony and served as Assistant Conductor of the University’s Opera Company. She was Associate Conductor of the Knoxville Symphony and the Music Director/Conductor of the Oak Ridge Symphony.

The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Ashe Civic Center in West Jefferson. Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for students. Advance tickets are available at the Ashe Arts Center or at the door the night of the performance.

For more information or to purchase tickets, call 336-846-ARTS.

An N.C. Senate bill would prohibit direct marketing to N.C. motorists by Tesla and companies like it. Is this a sound policy?
