Ashe County Schools Superintendent Dr. Travis L. Reeves announced his resignation on Thursday, Nov. 29.

He has been named the superintendent of the Surry County Schools and is tentatively scheduled to start in his new position on Jan. 1, 2013.

“I have truly enjoyed living and working in Ashe County,” said Dr. Reeves.

“My family and I have made many friends and created meaningful relationships. I will miss Ashe County and will always carry the pride that is demonstrated here in my heart. The decision to resign from Ashe County and join Surry County is based on moving my family closer to grandparents and immediate family who live and work in Surry County,” said Reeves in a press release supplied to the Post.

Prior to serving as Ashe County’s superintendent, Reeves was a coach at Mount Airy High School and a teacher at Mount Airy Junior High and Mount Airy Middle School. He had also been an assistant principal of Mount Airy Middle School and principal of Jones Intermediate School.

During his tenure here, the Ashe County School system has seen an increase in student achievement scores, an increase in the high school graduation rate and a decrease in the dropout rate. The system has also worked together to implement a new strategic plan and transition to a new curriculum.

“As a school system, we have pulled together to challenge our students to soar. I encourage you to continue these initiatives and work together to build on the positive momentum that has been created,” said Reeves.

Ashe Board of Education Chairman Charles King expressed appreciation for Reeves’ efforts to improve the system.

“We appreciate the dedication, hard work and leadership shown by Dr. Reeves. He has led the school system through a tough economic time which required difficult decisions to be made. Throughout this time, he has guided us in making choices that were best for the students of Ashe County. We wish Dr. Reeves success in his new position,” said King.

Reeves is a graduate of Alleghany County High School and earned his undergraduate degree from Radford University.

Surry County Board Chairman Earlie Coe said 24 candidates were interviewed for the post. He and vice chairman Brian Gates both said Reeve’s reputation and experience helped the board reach its decision.

“His five years experience as a superintendent definitely helped with the decision,” said Coe. “He is well thought of as an educational leader throughout the state. He also had very good references. The people he had down were very strong on his qualifications.”

Reeves is married to the former Leslie Conner of Mount Airy. The couple have two children, Weatherly, age 8, and Ridge age 4.

Details about the search to replace Reeves were not included in the press release.

The Ashe Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2012.

An N.C. Senate bill would prohibit direct marketing to N.C. motorists by Tesla and companies like it. Is this a sound policy?
