Senior Master Sgt. Johnny Hamm was recently selected as one of Air Force District of Washington’s “Capital Airmen” for 2013.
The Airmen who are showcased in this initiative have exemplified the Air Force core values of integrity first, service before self and excellence in all they do.
Hamm hails from Creston and enlisted in the Air Force in September 1995. Following basic training, he attended the Vehicle Maintenance Heavy Equipment Repair Apprentice Course at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.
He spent the next nine years in the vehicle maintenance career field until he became a military training leader in 2004. He served as the military training flight chief for four years and then became a first sergeant in 2008.
His assignments have included the United Kingdom, Mississippi, Republic of Korea, Oklahoma and Florida. Hamm has deployed in support of Operations Southern Watch, Allied Force, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
Hamm is the First Sergeant to the Commander, Air Force District of Washington, on all issues related to the enlisted force. He serves as the principle advisor to the commander and key leaders in maintaining discipline, standards, morale, and welfare of over 5,000 Air Force enlisted personnel assigned to AFDW and AF elements worldwide.
He builds and maintains a mission ready enlisted force to execute home station and expeditionary mission requirements. He provides professional guidance and monitors administrative actions, performance reports, awards, decorations, promotions, professional military education and family care programs.
Hamm has received numerous awards throughout his career for his outstanding work, to include being named First Sergeant of the Year three times. He earned a bachelor degree in technical management from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in 2008.
